Discovered a Spireon Device in My 2024 CRV

I was driving my 2024 CRV Hybrid Sport when something suddenly fell on my feet. It turned out to be a Spireon device connected to the car. I found online that it’s a GPS tracker. However, I never subscribed to any tracking services with Honda. I’m wondering if all CRVs come with this?

Braman Honda West Palm Beach engages in this frustrating practice. I opted out and still found that the device was spliced into my wiring harness. Apparently, it’s their policy to install a tracker on all new vehicles and then ‘remove’ it if you opt out.

Plus, once deactivated, the device is simply waste! I called and confirmed that it cannot be reactivated.

Edit: The installation was poorly done. I discovered a mess of electrical tape around wiring that had been spliced into my ‘brand new’ harness.

@Arden
One dealer here in Houston does the same but they won’t remove it and require you to pay for it. I decided not to buy from them.

Which dealer was this?

I can’t remember. It was a Honda dealer, but I called about a dozen looking for a CR V, so I can’t recall who exactly did it. Possibly Honda of Lake Jackson, but I wouldn’t quote me on that.

@Milan
Regardless, that dealer definitely does that! Luckily, the units they use (can’t remember which) are not spliced and are just piggybacked into existing harness connections with zip ties, so they’re easy to remove.

Did you finance the vehicle? Some dealers install GPS on financed cars to make repossession easier.

I financed through Honda Finance.

That’s your answer.

@Chin
They say it’s a benefit—if the car gets stolen, they can help locate it—but really, it’s just for repossession.

It’s not your car yet; they’re keeping track of their asset.

Where did it fall from? Are you leasing? I believe dealerships keep those installed to repossess cars if payment lapses.

It fell from the electrical switches above the brake pedal. I financed through Honda Finance.

@Skyler
Yeah, they’re ensuring they get every last cent from you.

@Skyler
I’ll check my car tomorrow!

It’s not just a GPS; they’re installing LoJac as well. Spireon acquired LoJac. I had it installed on my 2007 CR-V in Atlanta, and when I purchased my 2022 CR-V here in Nashville, it was already set up. They claimed it helps recover cars stolen from the lots. Getting LoJac can also reduce your insurance premium and assist police in case of theft. The app provides lots of info like maintenance schedules and battery status. The dealership covered a three-year app subscription too. I negotiated the price; I don’t know if finance companies have access post-purchase because they register LoJac to you. You should have received a welcome text with app instructions. It seems Honda may be implementing this broadly due to theft concerns, but overall it can be beneficial.

I had to install a tracker for my insurance or my rates would skyrocket.

This is a bit off-topic, but my brother bought a car from a lot three years ago (late 2021) and found an AirTag in the trunk. Months later, he discovered it and informed the dealership, who initially asked him to return it. He refused, and they eventually agreed to pick it up from his house. It sat there for nearly two years until they finally came to retrieve it without any compensation. If it were me, I would have discarded it immediately—it wasn’t part of our agreement!

For those who are finding these devices, where are they typically installed? I want to check if one is installed in our 2024 CRV we just bought!

I had one installed in my 2024 CR-V hybrid; it’s part of the alarm and LoJack system.
