Is a 2006 CR-V SE with 247k Miles Worth $5k? Seeking Advice!

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to buy my first CR-V. I had a new Tacoma but want to get out of the auto loan debt trap. I found a 2006 CR-V SE with 247k miles. It was owned by an 78-year-old lady who apparently took great care of it. She had it serviced every 5k miles at her local Honda dealer, including transmission fluid changes, differential fluids, brake fluids, etc.

They’re asking $5k, which seems a bit high, but I guess that’s the market these days. I know a car this old can have issues, but is it still worth buying?

I have a few other questions for the seasoned CR-V owners here:

  1. Has anyone had an engine swap done recently? If so, what was the cost?
  2. Same question for a new transmission—what does that typically cost?

I drive about 4-5,000 miles a year. My wife has a newer Forester Wilderness for our main car, so this would mostly be for running errands and short trips to work.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey there! That CR-V sounds like it’s been well taken care of, which is great to see. With such high mileage, it’s a gamble, but if everything checks out, it might be worth it. As for engine and transmission swaps, costs can vary widely depending on where you go and the condition of the vehicle. I’d say around $2k-$4k for an engine swap and about the same for a transmission, but definitely get a few quotes. Good luck!

Hey! I think the price might be a bit steep, but considering the service history and condition, it might be fair. I’ve done an engine swap on an older vehicle, and it cost me around $3k. Transmission swaps are similar in price. With your low annual mileage, it could be a reliable choice for you. Just make sure to get a pre-purchase inspection to check for any hidden issues.

Hi! Sounds like a well-maintained vehicle. For engine or transmission swaps, prices can vary, but $3k-$4k is a good ballpark. Given your low annual mileage, it could serve you well as a secondary car. Just make sure you’re comfortable with the asking price and get it inspected to avoid any surprises.

Hey! It’s great to hear that the CR-V has been so well cared for. A high-mileage vehicle like this can be a good deal if it’s in great shape. I’d suggest getting a full inspection to confirm its condition. As for swaps, they can be pricey, but it sounds like you won’t need to worry about that for a while with your low mileage.
